Coming off their first victory of the season, CITY2 heads south this weekend for a matchup with North Texas SC. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. CT, and the match will be streamed on mlsnextpro.com.
CITY2 and North Texas SC met three times last season. In the regular season, each team won at home. The two sides met again in the Western Conference Semifinals, where CITY2 earned a 2-0 victory to advance to the Western Conference Finals.
After picking up two points against league-leading Colorado Rapids II two weekends ago, CITY2 remained in form this past weekend when they challenged Whitecaps FC 2. Despite blitzing Vancouver from the first whistle, CITY2 could not convert their early scoring chances. Whitecaps FC 2 drew first blood with a goal in the 8th minute, but CITY2 equalized just a few minutes later when midfielder Faysal Bettache collected a loose ball near the box and served it into goal. As the back-and-forth match progressed, goalkeeper Christian Olivares made a handful of heroic saves to keep the teams even. In the 84th minute, midfielder Max Schneider booted a free kick into the box, and midfielder Sergio Rivas headed the cross home to give CITY2 a 2-1 lead and lock up the win.
With the goals from Bettache and Rivas, five (5) different players have now scored goals for CITY2 this season. Three (3) of those goals have come from headers, good for third-most in MLS NEXT Pro.
North Texas SC enters the matchup having lost their previous match 4-2 to Colorado Rapids 2 last weekend. They currently sit in second in the league in accurate passes (2687) and third in key passes (64). Having secured points their last two times out, CITY2 will look to continue their success and kickoff their two-game road trip with a win against a formidable conference foe.
